Water is a dominant feature in the Galway landscape and associated structures contribute significantly to its architectural heritage. This fascinating tour will explore the intricate network of waterways and their commercial, historical and amenity importance. It will take a path along the banks of the Corrib between Wolfe Tone Bridge and the Salmon Weir Bridge. Your guide is Dr Jackie Uí Chionna, a social and cultural historian with a particular interest in the history of Galway and its historic built environment.

The interface of sea, river, canal and lake makes for a fascinating tour. From medieval times to the present, the waterways have influenced the form of the built environment of Galway; in 1820 alone, the Corrib was used to power over 23 mills erected along its banks.

Nowadays the river and waterways provide invaluable amenity to the citizens of Galway.
